Salvatore Ferragamo's Iconic "Wizard of Oz" Shoes Gets A Make Over

There's no place like home, now is there?

Salvatore Ferragamo’s most famous shoe was a sandal, with rainbow wedge, he created in 1939 for teenage actress Judy Garland, following her role in The Wizard of Oz. As a tribute to Garland (who was a close friend of Ferragamo), and the film, Ferragamo has created a new version of the Varina: a ballerina. Like Dorothy’s red shoes these pumps are also sprinkled with fairy-dust, in the form of iridescent mercury blue, coral or almond-coloured sequins.

The Wizard of Oz has such a tremendous cultural impact on the Golden Age of television. The television showings of the film have taken its fame to a level far above what it had been in the pre-TV and early TV era. It has become almost literally a national institution, a cultural icon recognized by millions. The book itself is full of political interpretations. If you have read the book or seen the movie when you were young, you can revisit this book again to discover new meanings and interpretation in the book.

At Drops of Chic, we have similar sequined ballerina shoes available in pink and blue. These shoes are limited in colors and sizes. Please drop us an email at drops.of.chic.wardrobe@gmail.com for further inquiries.

First Spring: A Film By Yang Fudong for Prada's SS10 Collection

At Drops, we love the imagination that high fashion brings to our lives. Therefore, we love to share with our readers what we came across the internet. The latest talks around town is probably Prada's SS10 campaign where its advertising theme were oriental-centered with a pinch of surrealism.

Yang Fudong is a Chinese artist who lives in Shanghai and is a respected film maker and photographer. Yang Fudong’s films and photographs articulate multiple perspectives. His works investigate the structure and formation of identity through myth, personal memory and lived experience. Each of his works is a dramatic existential experience and a challenge to take on. His work is open-ended and inconclusive, therefore open to individual interpretation.

Each film and video is about the human condition. He mostly portrays his own generation of individuals in their late 20’s and early 30’s, young people who seem confused and appear to hover between the past and present. Yang Fudong’s work epitomizes how the recent and rapid modernization of China has overthrown traditional values and culture. He skillfully balances this dichotomy to create works endowed with classic beauty and timelessness. Yang Fudong seeks through multiple vignettes to offer the poetics of place and people as an alternative to the prominent politics of power. Whatever occurs, Yang Fudong’s film work and photography indicate that something remains untouched and unmoved, and perhaps all the more valuable for that reason.

One of his works includes "Dawn Mist, Seperation Faith" as seen below:

His signature artistic style is then translated for Prada's SS10 collection:
